The Best of Rhinoplasties

Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery or “nose job,” is the process of using cosmetic surgery to reshape the nose. It is a surgical procedure that can alter the size and/or shape of the nose, as well as relieve some breathing problems.

It is a misconception that all Rhinoplasty Surgeries are for cosmetic purposes; many people require medical intervention to assist in breathing and/or reconstruction from trauma.

Read more about what’s available at my Fourways practice here and contact me via phone or email for more details or to schedule a consultation. My office can be reached at 011 875 1630.

Rhinoplasty can be purely cosmetic or can be used to correct physical problems (such as breathing problems).  In most cases we, plastic surgeons, treat the aesthetic aspect and work with ENT surgeons to correct physical nasal issues.

Amongst the aesthetic problems that I can address:

  • Nose width
  • Nose length
  • Profile issues
  • Large or uneven nostrils
  • Crooked noses.

During your first consultation with me, you will be asked to provide a detailed description of how you wish to improve the appearance of your nose and what you are hoping I can do for you.

There will be obvious limitations but being open and honest is part of obtaining your desired result.

I can change the appearance of your nose in amazing ways, but you need to know that I will still be limited by the unique features of your nose, it’s internal and external structure.

Common requests from my patients include:

  • Making a nose smaller,
  • Reducing the bridge of the nose,
  • Narrowing the nose,
  • Making changes to the nasal tip,
  • Lifting a droopy nose
  • Revising a previous rhinoplasty

If you do not like the way your nose looks and are willing to undergo a surgical procedure, and if you are in good physical and mental health, then you are eligible for a rhinoplasty consultation.

Most rhinoplasty surgeons prefer to wait until an individual has completed his or her growth spurt. This means age 15 or 16 for girls, and a little later for boys. That said, I will hardly ever operate on such a young patient.

This is a big surgical procedure with long term results, it is important that the decision be made as an adult taking into account limitations in future surgery.

During the rhinoplasty surgery incisions are made inside of the nose including a small incision made on the underside of the nose between the nostrils. This allows me to perform an “open rhinoplasty”.

→What about the scars? The scars are well hidden and will almost be invisible once healing is complete.

I often decide upon the open rhinoplasty approach because it allows me greater visibility of the internal nose structures. Swelling and bruising however lasts longer with open rhinoplasty. I will discuss his approach with you based on your specific case.
Closed rhinoplasty is a surgical approach to alter the shape of the nose where minimal alteration is required. Often recovery is quicker and swelling is less using this approach but I only prefer this method for common rhinoplasty complaints:

  • Remove a bump from the bridge of the nose
  • Elevate the tip of the nose

After Rhinoplasty surgery you will notice significant swelling and bruising. I always warn my patients that swelling and bruising can last between 1 and 6 weeks for closed rhinoplasty, and longer for open rhinoplasty.

A splint will be applied to the dorsum of your nose that will have to remain in place for at least a week. Once the splint is removed however, the change to your nose will be immediately visible.

80% of the swelling, after Rhinoplasty, will lessen within 6 weeks. The remaining 20% may require up to a year but this remaining swelling is barely noticeable and is mostly internal; during this healing period the nose will become more refined.

Most patients, post Rhinoplasty surgery, are able to return to work any time between 7 to 10 days after their Rhinoplasty. Strenuous activity is limited up to six weeks, so too is exposure to the sun and extreme heat. This is more to allow additional time for healing and preserve the cosmetic result.

In some cases, after the Rhinoplasty, the tip of the nose can be numb for a few weeks. This is completely normal and will resolve within a few weeks without treatment.

Expect to see good results after about four weeks, but the final results are commonly seen after about 9 to 12 months. I always tell my patients that sometimes, minor changes and improvements occur even months after rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty results are permanent but, patients are to remember ageing may affect the results. This is of course natural ageing and has nothing to do with the overall Rhinoplasty result.

In my practice, breast augmentation surgery is hugely popular and I always try my best to give my patients great results and utmost satisfaction. With summer on its way, plastic surgeons do see an increase of breast surgery requests but there are many things you need to know and ask before making the final decision.

Before getting on with this month’s newsletter, I need you to know that my patient’s health and safety are my priorities and I always guaranty that silicone, and all the implants I use for all the breasts surgeries, are extremely safe and have undergone extensive research and testing.

I hope you enjoy what follows!

About the implants…

You will see, upon consultation for your breast augmentation surgery that breast implants vary greatly in shape and size. Silicone implants are the most popular as they feel more natural than saline implants. I am not saying that saline implants are hazardous but there have been complaints linked to deflation.

Textured vs. Smooth

Breast implants can be textured or smooth.

Most implants used in my practice are textured because research suggests that this is what gives the best rates of long term complications. It is thought that by choosing textured implants, we lower the chance of scar tissue forming around the implant.

In the past the shell of the smooth implants has been slightly softer; you will feel it less through the skin and tissue but this is no longer the case.

Please don’t be overwhelmed, I will take the time to discuss this with you in details so that you fully understand the procedure and its outcome.

Placement and incision options

During a breast augmentation surgery, there are 3 placement options: behind the muscle, in front of the muscle or half under the muscle and half under the bust. But because each patient is unique and wishes for different results, I will decide what’s best for you upon our one on one consultation.

During your consultation, I will advise you on the implant placement depending on your soft tissue characteristics and cosmetic desires.

With regard to the incisions (and thus, implant insertion sites), there are 3 different options:

. Under the fold of the breast (the infra mammary fold)

. Around the nipple

. Through the armpit

Each has their advantages and disadvantages: I personally prefer the infra-mammary fold or the periareolar but of course I will explain the pros and cons of each incision and answer all your questions before we make the final decision.

What is the recovery like?

The breast augmentation recovery does vary from one patient to another, but I usually advise my patients to take one week off work in order to get a good quality break and allow the breasts to heal nicely.

Expect your breasts to be swollen and tender and to experience some discomfort for a few days after the op.

After 5 or 6 days, the mild bruising will have disappeared but the swelling may remain for 3 to 5 weeks after the surgery.

Full recovery should normally be complete 6 weeks after the breast augmentation surgery.

Light activities can be resumed 2 days after the breast augmentation surgery but you must wait one whole week before resuming regular activities. I always insist that strenuous activities have to be avoided for 4 weeks in order not to impair the healthy recovery.

When it comes to exercise after a breast augmentation, I cannot stress enough how important it is to take it easy as certain movements can damage the operation’s results if done too soon after the surgery.

Welcome to my September newsletter! This month in my newsletter I want to talk about skin rejuvenation. In my practice I see many patients who tell me they will never ever undergo surgery but they still want to slow down ageing and have younger, fresher looking skin.

This is why they choose to have Dermal fillers and Botox injections. This month I will give you some insight about these two very popular treatments.

They are the perfect way of removing years from your face without having to experience pain or recovery. It is quick, safe and predictable, with a very high satisfaction rate from my patients.

Remember to follow my Facebook page and for extra information on all the treatments and procedures I offer, head over to my website !

Dermal fillers

Handsome mature man.

Dermal fillers give us options to:

  • Rejuvenate your skin,
  • Correct wrinkles,
  • Replace volume and
  • Can provide good insight to possible surgical outcomes – should that be the route you are considering.

I have many patients that in no way want to undergo surgery, and that is fine, they chose to have Dermal Filler treatments to keep them looking young and refreshed with beautiful skin to reverse visible signs of ageing.

Restylane Vital is skin rejuvenation treatment option that combines superbly will with Facelift surgery or as a treatment on its own. This treatment inlvolves injecting the pure, crystal-clear hyaluronic acid gel into the skin in micro-droplets with an extra-fine needle.

The results are a fresh, natural and more youthful appearance plumping up your skin from within and encouraging the formation of new collagen. You will enjoy a  long-lasting, natural and safe improvement to your skin by gradually releasing its benefits over several months.

The natural action of Hyaluronic acid is to attract moisture to the skin. As the molecule degrades it attracts more and more moisture to maintain Hydrobalance in the skin.

Extra hydration means thicker and plumper skin and therefore less wrinkles… Making it the perfect wrinkle treatment.

The most popular Dermal Filler treatment areas are:

  • Laugh lines
  • Lip outline
  • Lip volume
  • Wrinkles
  • Liquid face lifts
  • Skin rejuvenation (Restylane Vital)

Immediately after treatment with dermal fillers, you may look a little red. Sometimes clients can see small raised nodules at the treatment site; this is a normal reaction and will subside within a day or so.

What is the difference between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

Dermal Filler treatments are the treatments for filling wrinkles from the inside out or treatments like plumping lips.

Botox is a muscle-relaxing agent derived from Botulinum toxin that reduces wrinkles and fine lines by temporarily relaxing the muscle. The theory is very simple: Stop the muscle from forming a wrinkle and thereby eliminate it.

The most common area of treatment is frown lines of the forehead. But Botox may also be used to treat numerous areas including:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Excessive sweating
  • Migraines

Unlike Restylane and Teosyal, which treat deep wrinkles, Botox can be used to treat fine lines and wrinkles on the face, especially the brow area and the “crow’s feet” around the eyes.

Expect each Botox treatment to last approximately 4 months and it takes about 15 minutes to complete the procedure. If it is your first time getting Botox, it might take a little longer because I will need to examine and explain as much as possible for you to feel safe and comfortable.

What happens during a Botox treatment?
First I will mix the Botox powder with saline to create the botox solution. Then I use a very fine needle to inject the toxin into the overactive muscle. It sounds simple but placement and technique do play a role so always work with a trained plastic surgeon who understands facial anatomy.

How long before you’re able to see results from Botox?
Do not expect to see the results immediately after a Botox procedure as they usually start being noticeable 2 to 5 days later, when the toxin takes effect.

Did you know?

Not many people know this but it is possible for me to combine Botox and fillers. This is called a Liquid Facelift and works so beautifully as the two products complete each other really well. This procedure is a great way for me to mimic facelift results yet there is no recovery whatsoever and it also enables you to fix different problem areas in one session.

Some of my patients come for Dermal Filler treatments to test the results before opting for more permanent surgical options. If this a potential reason for undergoing Botox and dermal filler treatments I will not perform surgery until the product has completely degraded from the treatment site.

Of course you can simply opt for the surgery too; the choice is entirely yours. Remember to visit my website for additional surgical information.

Lastly, did you know that dermal filler treatments can be done quickly in my rooms, but also in combination with surgery under anaesthetic? Simply ask me if this is something you are considering.

I hope you have all enjoyed this newsletter on skin rejuvenation at my practice. Remember to follow and like my Facebook page and share all the info with those around you!

This month is the last of winter and so begins the rush of cosmetic procedures that the year-end brings. Everyone starts to think about the beach and their bodies and start to plan their cosmetic surgeries.

Being that there is such a spike in cosmetic procedures from September to December in the practice, we thought we’d see what procedures were most popular and compare that with international trends.

A fun topic, but also some differences between my rooms, South Africa and the rest of the world.

Interesting thoughts on most popular procedures:

  1. They are mostly breast cosmetic procedures
  2. All of them will add confidence to a personality
  3. There is a 90% – 10% women to man ratio, which is growing

What is the number 1 international procedure?

The 2012 international most popular cosmetic procedure was: Breast Augmentation
This surgery regained top spot after being knocked into 2nd in 2011 – come back tomorrow to find out what was number 1 in 2011.
Silicone implants have only recently been made legal in the USA and this could be a reason for their rise in numbers.  Match that with more competition liposuction results with non-invasive procedures like Coolsculpt and Vela shape and you could see why Liposuction would be down.
Though quicker and easier than liposuction, these non-invasive technologies yield much less dramatic results, so it will be interesting to see how they fare next year.
Internationally Botox is number 1 too skyrocketing from 2,619,739 procedures in 2011 to 3,257,913 procedures in 2012 (recorded stats from the US)

In the UK the stats reveal some interesting differences to Dr Serruriers’ practice, with some obvious similarities.

In the UK, women accounted for 90.5% of all cosmetic procedures in 2012 with a total of 39,070 procedures. The top ones in 2012 were:

  • Breast augmentation – down 1.6% from last year but still the most popular procedure for women
  • Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), up 13% to become the second biggest procedure for women
  • Face/Neck Lifts were third place for the third year running, with 5,324 procedures
  • The number of breast reduction and rhinoplasty procedures for women dropped – down 7% and 11% respectively
  • Fat transfer replaced liposuction as the 7th most popular procedure for women in 2012. Liposuction saw a 14% decrease
  • Brow lifts increased by 17% on last year

Male cosmetic surgery

Gynaecomastea is number the top male surgery, but liposuction and facelift surgery are growing in popularity.

Blepharoplasty is a very popular surgery in men, as many men undergo corrective eyelid surgery as women.

Blepharoplasty can be performed in the rooms as an outpatient procedure and it offers a quick recovery. It is little wonder that has double-digit growth in the practice.

The total number of surgical procedures worldwide is projected to be 8,536,379 and the number of non-surgical procedures is estimated at 8,759,187  – bringing the combined worldwide total of surgical and non-surgical procedures performed by qualified plastic surgeons to: 17,295,55

Did you know that the most cosmetic procedures are performed in these countries:

  1. The United States
  2. Brazil

Did you know in South Africa 70% of all the cosmetic procedures are performed between September and December?

It makes sense that most cosmetic and aesthetic procedures are performed on women between 25 and 44 (approx. 62%) but another approx. 16% is performed on women between 45 and 54.

Dr Serruriers cosmetic surgery practice profile actually matches closely with Brazil, their top 7 procedures are:

  • Breast Augmentation
  • Breat Reduction
  • Breast Lift
  • Blepharoplasty
  • Tummy Tuck
  • Facial Fat Transfer
  • Liposuction

This does make sense somewhat given our similar climates and love of the outdoors.

Most, if not all of these cases, also combine with some form of aesthetic medicine.

As an aesthetic treatment Botox is still number 1 in Dr Serruriers’ practice with dermal fillers a close second. They are often done in combination and also win combination with cosmetic surgery.

Men have a growing interest in cosmetic surgery with growth in Dr Serruriers practice throughout the surgical indications:

Breast reduction surgery at Dr Charles Serruriers’ rooms have not dropped as they did in the UK and Dr Serruriers rooms did not buck the liposuction trend as did the UK, as it is listed as a most popular combination treatment.

In many cases Dr Serrurier combines cosmetic procedures with Liposuction to maximise theatre time and results. For marginally more your results can be exponentially better – but this needs to be discussed with him during the consultation process.

Blepharoplasty is the highest gainer of all of Dr Serruriers cosmetic procedures.
Cosmetic eyelid surgery:

  1. Brightens the face,
  2. Removes that tired looks
  3. Takes years from your visible age

Although the majority of Dr Serrurier’s patients are women, it is exciting to note that there is a large range of ages represented through the practice.

Welcome to my July newsletter!

This month, I have decided to talk about winter as the perfect season for surgery, in particular, for liposuction and tummy tuck.

Maybe you had no idea that seasons did matter when talking about recovery or comfort post op but they do and I always highly advise my patients to taking these external aspects in considerations in order to have the best experience possible.

I am thrilled to give you some insight and knowledge on how these procedures work and how it can help you feel better in your own skin.

Thinking about going under the knife, but not sure when the best time for plastic surgery may be? The autumn and winter months are some of the most popular times for surgery, so you may want to book a consultation now.

Here are some reasons why:

If liposuction or a tummy tuck is your intended procedure, would you really want to do it at the beginning of summer, the swimsuit season, the time for halters and shorts?

Winter recovery is easier

Many people are hesitant to undergo procedures like breast augmentation or a tummy tuck because of the time it takes to recover. Unfortunately, there’s not much of a way around this issue. But in winter you can wear layers of clothing, enjoy snuggling in bed during recovery and also have your results ready for show when the summer season rolls around.

Of course you can always choose a non-surgical procedure like Botox injections or dermal fillers year round as the recovery is practically zero.

For best recovery you will be instructed to take it easy and spend much of your time indoors for a few days. This alone makes the cold, winter months a better choice.

And, once you are able to go outside and move around again, wearing layers of clothes or accessories to hide any post-surgery garments, dressings or scars would be completely normal.

Medical reasons for winter recovery

Another good reason to undergo surgery in winter:  If you have a stressful job or life and have been thinking about having a procedure, this could be the perfect opportunity to have a “staycation” and recover.

This means you won’t be longing for the outdoors, be tempted to hit the town and more likely to follow post-surgical instructions. Medically this is the best.

Winter is also a great time for plastic surgery because patients can cover up bandages in layers of clothes.

Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.

Basically, winter is the best season to have plastic surgery, no matter what procedure you are having done but especially for long-recovery body surgeries like:

  • Liposuction and
  • Tummy tuck.

Amongst the ideal winter procedures, this month I want to talk about liposuction and abdominoplasty which are notorious for being the most appropriate surgeries during the cold months, as the recovery is the longest for these procedures.

First up is liposuction, which is a popular procedure at my practice and one that can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, including:

  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Knees
  • Upper arms
  • Chin
  • Cheeks
  • Neck

Although liposuction is no substitute for a healthy diet and exercise, liposuction can remove stubborn areas of fat that does not respond to traditional weight-loss methods.

Liposuction surgery may be considered to treat areas of excess fat in the stomach, buttocks, hips, love handles, saddlebags, thighs, calves, ankles, breasts (including male breasts), back, arms and neck.

Liposuction recovery:
Physical activity should be restricted for the first 24 hours post operatively for all Liposuction cases. Just because the pain medication will have you feeling well doesn’t mean you should be up and about. Take the time and rest, you and the result will benefit from it.

After this, light exercise is encouraged but strenuous exercise should not be resumed for at least 4 weeks. Now you can see why winter is a great time for liposuction recovery?

Post operatively Liposuction patients are required to wear a support garment for approximately 6 weeks. This helps minimise swelling and bruising, and helps maintain the aesthetic result.

Yes, they are not the most flattering garments but when you consider the surgery and your desired outcome the garment is a small sacrifice. As mentioned before, winter clothing will help hide all the unflattering post-surgical garments until you are fully healed.

It takes at least approximately 6 months for all the swelling to subside and your final result to be revealed. So now you ask me when I think the ideal time for liposuction surgery is? Autumn!

Plan your surgery and you will be able to reveal your new body at the first sign of summer.

Now, onto abdominoplasty (also called tummy tuck), which is the one of the most popular plastic surgeries, for women, but more and more men are coming to my practice to undergo the tummy tuck procedure.

Women tend to undergo this procedure post child rearing, when getting your body back becomes more of a priority. And it is another great winter procedure!

Did you know that if you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck, additional combination surgeries such as liposuction also might be a great way for you to get more out of your surgery?

After your tummy tuck or mini tummy tuck, the abdomen will be swollen and tender. Moderate pain can be expected for about two days but the pain will decrease as your healing progresses. Pain and discomfort will be controlled with medication that I will prescribe.

The recovery is longer than most cosmetic procedures and this extended recovery makes it a perfect winter surgery.

I may recommend that you use a support garment or girdle at the end of the tummy tuck or during the healing period. Usually the garment is worn for two to six weeks, depending on need.

They may look unsightly but they benefits are well worth the additional discomfort. As with liposuction, winter clothing can help you hide the post-surgical garments and keep you as comfortable as possible.

Downtime after a Tummy Tuck surgery?
Most patients take between one and two weeks off work after an abdominoplasty. This is simply to recover, not necessarily to be back on your feet, although a minimum of one week off work would aid in the healing process.

Again winter time is easier to just stay indoors and relax in bed: perfect healing conditions! Healing is usually complete and the final result is visible within a few months.

Welcome to this month’s issue!

What we will be covering this month:

  • Introduction
  • Buttock lift
  • Thigh lift
  • Arm lift

This month, my newsletter is all about body lift procedures: thigh lift, buttock lift and arm lift.

These contouring and tightening surgeries give my patients wonderful and long lasting results.

I am thrilled to give you some insight and knowledge on how these procedures work and how it can help you feel better in your own skin.

Remember to visit my website for more info on the procedures and treatments I offer

“You need to know: Body lift procedures are in no way and alternative to getting in shape the healthy way”

A thigh lift reshapes the thighs by reducing excess skin, and in some cases fat, resulting in smoother skin and better-proportioned contours of the thighs and lower body.

Incision patterns vary based on the area or areas to be treated, the degree of correction and patient and surgeon preference. One common technique I use for a thigh lift is to place the incisions in the groin, extending downward wrapping around the back of the thigh.

This way, the incision can be easily hidden by most types of clothing and swimsuits, we definitely don’t want the scarring to be a determining factor in making you more comfortable in your own skin.

During your thigh lift, the underlying tissue matrix will be reshaped and tightened, and skin will be reduced and re-draped. This is how we get results to offer you a more proportionate and smoother body contour

You may qualify for a minimal incision medial thigh lift that involves an incision only in the groin area. I will, of course, determine what’s appropriate.

Improving the contours of the outer thigh during a thigh lift may require an incision extending from the groin around the hip. Through these incisions Dr Serrurier will tighten tissues for a smoother, better-toned lower body contour.

The tighter contouring resulting from a thigh lift is apparent almost immediately, although initially obscured by some swelling and bruising which is completely normal post-procedure.

Its main purpose is to improve and/or remove excess, sagging buttock and thigh skin that has developed as a result of weight loss, aging and gravity, or genetics. It is important to note that these procedures are in no way an alternative to exercising or dieting.

Buttock lift surgery at the practice is typically performed as an outpatient procedure with the use of general anaesthesia. The procedure can also be performed as part of a body lift or as part of a circumferential abdominoplasty.

Often buttock lift, like tummy tuck and thigh lift surgery, is combined with liposuction for optimal results.

There is not one overall approach used for buttock lift surgery. I will tailor a method that will best suit your body shape and the amount of skin and fat to be removed. Together upon your first consultation we will discuss your specific characteristics and expectations in order to determine what the best approach is.

In general, the buttock lift incisions are made at the waist or slightly below the waist. After the incision or incisions are made, excess skin and fat is detached from the soft tissue and removed. The skin is then tightened and closed in layers.

The results of buttock lift surgery are visible almost immediately, but it may take several months for your final results to fully develop. A buttock lift does not add volume or shape to your existing buttocks, but it can give it a sleeker, more toned appearance.

Full recovery from buttock lift surgery usually takes four to six months. While swelling and bruising usually subside within two to three weeks. It is crucial that you follow Dr Serruriers’ post-surgical instructions when it comes to your recovery.

Dr Serrurier will recommend that you avoid any strenuous activity and exercise for up to three months following your buttock lift surgery. Follow-up appointments are the best way to ensure long-lasting results from buttock lift surgery.

If you are unhappy with the way your arms look and wish to remove some diet resistant fat and tighten the skin, I can help you thanks to a procedure called arm lift or Brachioplasty.

This is an increasingly popular procedure in both men and women, for those self-conscious about “bingo arms”

The purpose of the Arm Lift is to remove the excess skin from the upper arms and reduce the circumference of the upper arms.

You may be a candidate for an upper arm lift if you have sagging skin on the upper arms. Upper arm tissue can relax with age, genetics, gravity and weight loss, and most people are self-conscious about it.

After their Brachioplasty, patients usually report:

  • A more youthful appearance and thinner contour to the arms.
  • Reduction of flabbiness, extra skin and fat, in the upper inner arms.
  • Greater confidence and comfort in clothing
  • Long-lasting results.

In order to remove the unwanted skin during your arm lift, an incision is made that may run from near the elbow into the underarm. Dr Serrurier will place the incision in the most inconspicuous location (inner arm toward the back), where the tissue can be best tightened.

The scar unfortunately will be visible, but that should not be a deciding factor, especially with the advancements in scar treatments of today.

After the arm lift operation, you will experience some degree of bruising, swelling, tenderness and/or numbness, which is completely normal. Drains may remain in place for about three to seven days (case dependant).

Dr Serrurier will limit your activity for 5 -7 days following surgery and you should avoid strenuous activities for about four to six weeks.

This month in my newsletter I will be talking about the surgeries available to mothers at my practice that are designed to counteract the physical effects of childbearing and to enhance your appearance after time has left its mark.

Of course, if you are interested and would like to book an appointment with me to find out more about breast lift or any other procedure, feel free to phone on 011 875 1630

mummy makeover

Looking great after child birth

There are many options for you whether you would like me to work on your breast, perform a tummy tuck or a liposuction. I still would like you to be close to your ideal body weight and also suggest that you should have completed your family before undergoing any “mummy makeover.”

As a new mum, seeing your body changing and looking different after childbirth can be somewhat traumatic. Some women bounce back beautifully but they are the lucky few. I am here to make you feel like yourself again and most importantly to make you feel happy and comfortable with your body.

Through the mummy makeover you can choose to undergo as many or as few procedures as you want and these procedures available to you are customized to match your wishes and specific condition. I also want you to keep in mind that these procedures are not necessarily invasive surgeries: They can simply be cosmetic improvements, like skin rejuvenation using fillers or Botox.

Sometimes it can be the smallest change that makes all the difference and simply a little Botox can make you feel top of the world

Breasts and post-pregnancy…

The loss of volume gained during pregnancy will cause the breasts to appear somewhat empty.
We can correct this easily with Breast Lift or Breast Augmentation procedures.

Breast augmentation is a great way for me to re-create lost volume via the insertion of a very natural looking implant. Breast augmentation is performed to increase the size and fullness of the breast.

Breast Lift will improve the droopiness as well as the position of the nipple.

Through breast lift surgery – I can tighten the skin, improve the shape and firmness of your breasts and restore their proper position on the chest.

Breast reduction surgery is a procedure that minimizes a woman’s breast size by removing fat, tissue, and excess skin. Breast reduction will reduce the extra breast mass and create mode elegant but also more comfortable breasts, giving your upper body more balance.

Liposuction and tummy-tuck

Another common surgery after childbirth is the tummy tuck. The tummy is the area of the body that undergoes the most transformation during pregnancy as it expands to allow more space for the growing womb.

Undergoing a C-section will usually impair the muscles of the abdominal wall. This means your tummy will battle to get tight again and bounce back to what it looked like before your pregnancy.

An abdominoplasty can be very effective in reducing the bulge caused by excess skin and fat, and loose abdominal muscles. The result is a flatter, firmer and shapelier abdomen.

Liposuction is a procedure that can be done to better contour diet resistant localized fatty deposits, but only provided the skin tone is good (no stretch marks) and the muscle tone is good.

During pregnancy your body stores fat and changes shape to accommodate the foetus and this shape can be hard to lose post childbirth.

The great thing about liposuction is that it can target many different areas such as:  inner thighs, outer thighs, love handles, arms, buttocks and much more.

This month, I would like to talk about facials at my practice. They are performed by my therapist Yana and are such a wonderful option when it comes to taking care of your skin and making sure you are giving it a great treatment with long-term benefits.

I will be talking about the very nature of facials and why they make such a huge difference to the quality of your skin!

Remember to visit my website for more info on the procedures and treatments I offer

I hope you enjoy what follows!

“Yana, the therapist, often recommends that you come for a professional facial every 4-6 weeks in order to target skin issues specific to you”

What are facials?

A facial is one of the best ways to take care of your skin, especially when it’s given by an experienced, knowledgeable therapist like Yana.

    • Even tone and PH balance of skin
    • Hydrating effect
    • Anti-ageing benefits

Facials are a wonderful option when it comes to occasional skincare for they encourage hydration, which is a key factor when it comes to ageing.

These are perfect treatment options for cosmetic maintenance and to enhance your facelift results.

Something to remember…

Yana can treat various skin problems on the face, neck and décolleté with a facial designed for your skin type.  But then going for a facial once in a while is not enough for your skin to look great all year long.

How is a facial performed?

How will Yana conduct the facial consultation?

A facial should begin with a consultation. Yana will have you fill out a form that has questions about your skin concerns, your diet, how much water you drink, drugs and supplements you take, and products you are currently using.

Before starting the facial treatment Yana will cover your eyes and looks at your skin through a brightly lit magnifying lamp.

She will then determine your basic skin type (dry, oily, combination, sensitive or normal) and skin conditions (acne, blackheads, whiteheads, aging, sun-damage, dehydration, etc.) after that she will choose the appropriate products and treatments.

At the end of the facial, Yana will most likely apply a toner/serum or/and moisturizer and sunscreen if it is daytime. She will also end the session by telling you how you can take better care of your skin and she will recommend some products that will help the results from the facial last longer.

The B.T Micro device

The bt-micro™ is the latest rage in hand held professional technology and combines ultrasonic peeling with patented micro current and ultrasound penetration capabilities. It is a wonderful tool that will leave you with a cleaner, firmer skin. This is the perfect addition to our facial treatment regime.

The BT-micro™ is applied to the skin in upward, peeling motions. The exfoliation process with the BT-micro™ should take no more than 4-6 minutes. The results are amazingly clear and smooth skin that is ready to accept strategic topical products!

Here are the main Benefits of this procedure:

Happy new year to you all and I wish you all a prosperous 2013. Coming back to work after a holiday is for some a nightmare, but for me it is an exciting affair. There will be new challenges and much interesting work to be done.

I am thrilled to talk about Liposuction in this January newsletter! Did you know that liposuction is surprisingly a popular month for cosmetic surgery?

“Liposuction is a great combination procedure”

Also, liposuction is a procedure that I find most people want to add as a combination procedure.
I.e. Have your facelift and include some liposuction or a breast augmentation with additional liposuction.

I hope you enjoy the topic, remember you can also stay in touch via my facebook page or website

Is liposuction right for you?

First things first! Liposuction is NOT a weight reducing procedure and ideally, patients should be within their healthy body weight for height range (BMI 19-25).

This cannot be stressed enough. Ideally we want to shape and remove stubborn, diet and exercise resistant fat with liposuction.

Any one or combination of the following conditions may indicate that you are a good candidate for liposuction surgery:

  • Areas of fat deposits that are out of proportion with the rest of your body and do not go away with diet and exercise
  • Diet Resistant fat
  • Areas with minimal amounts of excess skin (Liposuction removes fat not skin) and good skin elasticity.

We will discuss this in more detail during the consultation process, we will also talk about your aesthetic needs, if you want combination surgery and of course the surgical risks.

It is extremely important to be fully informed.

→ Basic Liposuction technique involves the removal of fat via a hollow metal tube (cannula) that is passed through the fatty tissue. A common liposuction approach is called Suction Assisted Liposuction (SAL). This technique involves the removal of fat by attaching a pump that generates a vacuum.

Before your liposuction surgery

During the initial consultation, you may be asked to look in a mirror and point out exactly what you would like to see improved.
Knowing and understanding your needs is part of achieving your desired result.

Pictures may be taken of you, especially if the areas that will be treated are on your posterior aspect (back, buttock, etc.). This will help me understand your expectations and determine whether they can realistically be achieved.

A determination of the elasticity of the skin will also occur during the consultation. I have to know I can achieve what you need.

A discussion concerning your ideal weight and realistic weight will most likely occur during the consultation. Plans such as future pregnancies, etc. may be also discussed. These simple but often overlooked questions can radically effect your long-term results.

The amount of fat removed at any one session is restricted to 2,5 – 3 litres; this is to minimise the chances of postoperative complications. This is another reason why we want you to be close to your ideal weight.

What is recovery like?

Liposuction surgery is usually performed as a day case. If this is the case, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and to stay with you for the next 24 hours as precaution.

You will be uncomfortable for the first few days. Pain medication will keep you pain free but having help around the house is highly recommended.

If you are undergoing large volume liposuction, I will recommend you be hospitalised for the night.

Physical activity should be restricted for the first 24 hours post operatively for all Liposuction cases. Just because the pain medication will have you feeling well doesn’t mean you should be up and about.

After the first 24 hours, light exercise is encouraged but strenuous exercise should not be resumed for at least 4 weeks.

Post operatively Liposuction patients are required to wear a support garment for approximately 6 weeks to help minimise swelling and bruising, and to maintain the aesthetic result.

I estimate that it will take 6 months for all the swelling to subside and the final result to become visible. That said Liposuction has superb results and an incredibly high patient satisfaction rate.

Make an appointment now if you would like to discuss your Liposuction options.
