The Best of Rhinoplasties

Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery or “nose job,” is the process of using cosmetic surgery to reshape the nose. It is a surgical procedure that can alter the size and/or shape of the nose, as well as relieve some breathing problems.

It is a misconception that all Rhinoplasty Surgeries are for cosmetic purposes; many people require medical intervention to assist in breathing and/or reconstruction from trauma.

Read more about what’s available at my Fourways practice here and contact me via phone or email for more details or to schedule a consultation. My office can be reached at 011 875 1630.

Rhinoplasty can be purely cosmetic or can be used to correct physical problems (such as breathing problems).  In most cases we, plastic surgeons, treat the aesthetic aspect and work with ENT surgeons to correct physical nasal issues.

Amongst the aesthetic problems that I can address:

  • Nose width
  • Nose length
  • Profile issues
  • Large or uneven nostrils
  • Crooked noses.

During your first consultation with me, you will be asked to provide a detailed description of how you wish to improve the appearance of your nose and what you are hoping I can do for you.

There will be obvious limitations but being open and honest is part of obtaining your desired result.

I can change the appearance of your nose in amazing ways, but you need to know that I will still be limited by the unique features of your nose, it’s internal and external structure.

Common requests from my patients include:

  • Making a nose smaller,
  • Reducing the bridge of the nose,
  • Narrowing the nose,
  • Making changes to the nasal tip,
  • Lifting a droopy nose
  • Revising a previous rhinoplasty

If you do not like the way your nose looks and are willing to undergo a surgical procedure, and if you are in good physical and mental health, then you are eligible for a rhinoplasty consultation.

Most rhinoplasty surgeons prefer to wait until an individual has completed his or her growth spurt. This means age 15 or 16 for girls, and a little later for boys. That said, I will hardly ever operate on such a young patient.

This is a big surgical procedure with long term results, it is important that the decision be made as an adult taking into account limitations in future surgery.

During the rhinoplasty surgery incisions are made inside of the nose including a small incision made on the underside of the nose between the nostrils. This allows me to perform an “open rhinoplasty”.

→What about the scars? The scars are well hidden and will almost be invisible once healing is complete.

I often decide upon the open rhinoplasty approach because it allows me greater visibility of the internal nose structures. Swelling and bruising however lasts longer with open rhinoplasty. I will discuss his approach with you based on your specific case.
Closed rhinoplasty is a surgical approach to alter the shape of the nose where minimal alteration is required. Often recovery is quicker and swelling is less using this approach but I only prefer this method for common rhinoplasty complaints:

  • Remove a bump from the bridge of the nose
  • Elevate the tip of the nose

After Rhinoplasty surgery you will notice significant swelling and bruising. I always warn my patients that swelling and bruising can last between 1 and 6 weeks for closed rhinoplasty, and longer for open rhinoplasty.

A splint will be applied to the dorsum of your nose that will have to remain in place for at least a week. Once the splint is removed however, the change to your nose will be immediately visible.

80% of the swelling, after Rhinoplasty, will lessen within 6 weeks. The remaining 20% may require up to a year but this remaining swelling is barely noticeable and is mostly internal; during this healing period the nose will become more refined.

Most patients, post Rhinoplasty surgery, are able to return to work any time between 7 to 10 days after their Rhinoplasty. Strenuous activity is limited up to six weeks, so too is exposure to the sun and extreme heat. This is more to allow additional time for healing and preserve the cosmetic result.

In some cases, after the Rhinoplasty, the tip of the nose can be numb for a few weeks. This is completely normal and will resolve within a few weeks without treatment.

Expect to see good results after about four weeks, but the final results are commonly seen after about 9 to 12 months. I always tell my patients that sometimes, minor changes and improvements occur even months after rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty results are permanent but, patients are to remember ageing may affect the results. This is of course natural ageing and has nothing to do with the overall Rhinoplasty result.

Dr Charles Serrurier’s Advice: Plan Your Procedures

This Blog is dedicated to those who are considering procedures and treatments. Many of you may be quite sure of what service you want – but the question is, at what time is it most suitable? Different procedures require different preparations and involve different amounts of recovery ‘down-time’. So I hope that the information below allows you to plan your year with a few key considerations that will make your life much easier – after all, your schedule is meant to work for you…

Plan your year to best suite your recovery
Procedures and treatments are chosen by each patient to when it suites them best. However, correct planning to ensure an easy and safe recovery should be priority and this blog should help do just that.

Early year: Jan – March
The beginning of the year it is a fantastic period to have procedures such as:

Both involve a relatively small period of down-time (usually 1 week) and both produce a younger, fresher, revitalized appearance – a great way to start of the year.

Brow Lines on one’s forehead deepen with age, eventually resulting in a misinterpreted expression of fatigue or hostility. The Brow Lift procedure will eliminate this problem and return your features to a naturally younger you.

Corrective eyelid surgery is popular due to the way natural results rejuvenate a face and remove years from your visible age. Combine that with minimal downtime and you can see why more and more of my patients are opting for this procedure.

Summer season: October – March
Speaking of the Summer Season – guess what the most popular procedure is just prior to the days of sunshine? Okay, so it is not that hard a guess, everyone wants to get ready for the beach, and why not have the body you desire to match that sexy bikini that you have been waiting for…

Breast Augmentation allows one to create the contours and add volume that one has always wanted. Breast augmentation is the most popular procedure in my practice and although recovery is not really an issue, booking a consultation time can be tricky, especially toward the end of the year. So please plan and book early.

Easter Holidays
If you do have a holiday planned within the year, this is often a good time for a Face-Lift, as they do require some recovery time. Easter holidays are normally a busy period for Face Lift and Rhinoplasty surgery. Face-Lifts can truly transform an appearance whilst working with ones natural jaw-line & cheek bones – if you are interested I suggest you have a read on my personal approach to the procedure

All year round treatments
If you are looking for some help staying revitalized through the year then fret not, Yana performs Facials with passion and care.

Facials clean exfoliate and nourishes the skin, promoting: Clear, Well-hydrated complexion, and can and help your skin look younger.

Fortunately, touch-up treatments and maintenance make-overs such as Botox and Fillers can be performed throughout the year because they have virtually no down-time – we can help you with these quick and easy treatments to keep you feeling great no matter what weather or season.

Botox can be used to target wrinkles by smoothing the skin and Dermal Fillers can rejuvenate your skin, correct wrinkles and replace volume – book a consultation to find out which one is suited to your goals.

Winter: May – July
If you are planning on having some Liposuction done or perhaps a Tummy-Tuck procedure it is often advised that you plan it such that your down-time is within the cooler months of the year – this makes it easier to cover the post-operative bandage corsets that will help you recover and also stay in bed to assist with immediate post surgical recovery… some patients have said that it has been great to have a winter were they actually got into better shape rather than gaining weight…

Both Tummy-Tucks and Liposuction  require more down-time than most procedures – so it is best to plan for them earlier rather than later. If you do take proper care of yourself, with my aid and guidance, both procedures can have phenomenal results without any complications.

I hope that this blog will help you decide on when it is best for you to make a booking, but if you would like to know more please do not hesitate to contact us so that you may be happy and comfortable with the schedule that you have set for yourself this year.

Kind regards,

Welcome to October and Breast Cancer Awareness month. I have already covered Breast Cancer Awareness in previous newsletters but if you want to read my thoughts on the subject, please visit my blog or visit my website

This month my topic is Rhinoplasty (also known as a “nose job”) is the process of using cosmetic surgery to reshape the nose.

Rhinoplasty in my practice

If you are unhappy with the way your nose looks like, are willing to undergo a surgical procedure, and if you are in good physical and mental health, then you are eligible for a Rhinoplasty consultation.

It is important to book your consultation early. October, November and December are particularly busy months in my practice and we don’t want you to miss out on your surgery.

I hope you enjoy what follows!

How I can help you

Amongst the aesthetic problems that I can address:

    1. Nose width
    2. Nose length
    3. Profile issues
    4. Large or uneven nostrils
    5. Crooked noses.

During your first visit at my practice, I will ask you to provide a detailed description of how you wish to improve the appearance of your nose and what you are hoping I can do for you. Finding some pictures of what you are hoping I will achieve through Rhinoplasty is a good idea.  A picture helps me understand what you want your new nose to look like so brings some examples with you.

It is important that you take time to think about your desired outcome of the Rhinoplasty before you meet with me for the first time. Even though I can’t create “any” nose for you through a Rhinoplasty, you should tell me what you consider to be your ideal nose and let me tell you what is possible and what is not.

Ideally, write down your specific ideas and questions so that you don’t end up having any uncertainties about the procedure. I always assure my patients that I will do my utter best to provide you with the best care and results and I want you to be comfortable and reassured.

The appearance of your nose can be altered in amazing ways, but you must keep in mind that the result is limited by the unique features of your nose’s internal and external structure.

What I want you to know about the recovery

Expect moderate to severe degree of pain for the first week. I will of course prescribe pain medication to ease your recovery. You will be uncomfortable but my patients are always thrilled with the results and tell me that it does justify the surgery.

I usually warn my patients that swelling and bruising can last between 1 and 6 weeks for closed rhinoplasty, and longer for open rhinoplasty. The term open and closed Rhinoplasty is better described on my website

In some cases, after the Rhinoplasty, the tip of the nose can be numb for a few weeks. This is completely normal and will resolve within a few weeks without treatment.

Post-surgery, I will need to see you for a check up and to change your bandages. Usually this will take place 5 to 10 days after your Rhinoplasty. You will need to wear a splint for about two weeks after the operation.

Most of my patients feel comfortable enough to resume work 1 to 3 weeks after the Rhinoplasty. It Is the bruising, more than the pain that would keep you at home for longer.

“Predictable results with new surgical techniques”

I always tell my patients not to exercise for 6 weeks after their Rhinoplasty. This is to ensure a stable result as exercise can lead to bleeding and prolong swelling.

Finally, at this time of year it is important to book early. The practice diary fills up fast during October, November and December with high cosmetic demand.

Be it for Breast Augmentation or Rhinoplasty, please book early to avoid disappointment.
