Dr Charles Serrurier’s Advice: Plan Your Procedures

womenwithPhone

This Blog is dedicated to those who are considering procedures and treatments. Many of you may be quite sure of what service you want – but the question is, at what time is it most suitable? Different procedures require different preparations and involve different amounts of recovery ‘down-time’. So I hope that the information below allows you to plan your year with a few key considerations that will make your life much easier – after all, your schedule is meant to work for you…

Plan your year to best suite your recovery
Procedures and treatments are chosen by each patient to when it suites them best. However, correct planning to ensure an easy and safe recovery should be priority and this blog should help do just that.

Early year: Jan – March
The beginning of the year it is a fantastic period to have procedures such as:

Both involve a relatively small period of down-time (usually 1 week) and both produce a younger, fresher, revitalized appearance – a great way to start of the year.

Brow Lines on one’s forehead deepen with age, eventually resulting in a misinterpreted expression of fatigue or hostility. The Brow Lift procedure will eliminate this problem and return your features to a naturally younger you.

Corrective eyelid surgery is popular due to the way natural results rejuvenate a face and remove years from your visible age. Combine that with minimal downtime and you can see why more and more of my patients are opting for this procedure.

Summer season: October – March
Speaking of the Summer Season – guess what the most popular procedure is just prior to the days of sunshine? Okay, so it is not that hard a guess, everyone wants to get ready for the beach, and why not have the body you desire to match that sexy bikini that you have been waiting for…

Breast Augmentation allows one to create the contours and add volume that one has always wanted. Breast augmentation is the most popular procedure in my practice and although recovery is not really an issue, booking a consultation time can be tricky, especially toward the end of the year. So please plan and book early.

Easter Holidays
If you do have a holiday planned within the year, this is often a good time for a Face-Lift, as they do require some recovery time. Easter holidays are normally a busy period for Face Lift and Rhinoplasty surgery. Face-Lifts can truly transform an appearance whilst working with ones natural jaw-line & cheek bones – if you are interested I suggest you have a read on my personal approach to the procedure

All year round treatments
If you are looking for some help staying revitalized through the year then fret not, Yana performs Facials with passion and care.

Facials clean exfoliate and nourishes the skin, promoting: Clear, Well-hydrated complexion, and can and help your skin look younger.

Fortunately, touch-up treatments and maintenance make-overs such as Botox and Fillers can be performed throughout the year because they have virtually no down-time – we can help you with these quick and easy treatments to keep you feeling great no matter what weather or season.

Botox can be used to target wrinkles by smoothing the skin and Dermal Fillers can rejuvenate your skin, correct wrinkles and replace volume – book a consultation to find out which one is suited to your goals.

Winter: May – July
If you are planning on having some Liposuction done or perhaps a Tummy-Tuck procedure it is often advised that you plan it such that your down-time is within the cooler months of the year – this makes it easier to cover the post-operative bandage corsets that will help you recover and also stay in bed to assist with immediate post surgical recovery… some patients have said that it has been great to have a winter were they actually got into better shape rather than gaining weight…

Both Tummy-Tucks and Liposuction  require more down-time than most procedures – so it is best to plan for them earlier rather than later. If you do take proper care of yourself, with my aid and guidance, both procedures can have phenomenal results without any complications.

I hope that this blog will help you decide on when it is best for you to make a booking, but if you would like to know more please do not hesitate to contact us so that you may be happy and comfortable with the schedule that you have set for yourself this year.

Kind regards,

DR CHARLES SERRURIER APRIL 2013 NEWSLETTER -FACIALS-

facials-1

WELCOME!

This month, I would like to talk about facials at my practice. They are performed by my therapist Yana and are such a wonderful option when it comes to taking care of your skin and making sure you are giving it a great treatment with long-term benefits.

I will be talking about the very nature of facials and why they make such a huge difference to the quality of your skin!

Remember to visit my website for more info on the procedures and treatments I offer www.drserrurier.co.za

I hope you enjoy what follows!

Charles

“Yana, the therapist, often recommends that you come for a professional facial every 4-6 weeks in order to target skin issues specific to you”

What are facials?

A facial is one of the best ways to take care of your skin, especially when it’s given by an experienced, knowledgeable therapist like Yana.

    • Even tone and PH balance of skin
    • Hydrating effect
    • Anti-ageing benefits

Facials are a wonderful option when it comes to occasional skincare for they encourage hydration, which is a key factor when it comes to ageing.

These are perfect treatment options for cosmetic maintenance and to enhance your facelift results.

Something to remember…

Yana can treat various skin problems on the face, neck and décolleté with a facial designed for your skin type.  But then going for a facial once in a while is not enough for your skin to look great all year long.

How is a facial performed?

How will Yana conduct the facial consultation?

A facial should begin with a consultation. Yana will have you fill out a form that has questions about your skin concerns, your diet, how much water you drink, drugs and supplements you take, and products you are currently using.

Before starting the facial treatment Yana will cover your eyes and looks at your skin through a brightly lit magnifying lamp.

She will then determine your basic skin type (dry, oily, combination, sensitive or normal) and skin conditions (acne, blackheads, whiteheads, aging, sun-damage, dehydration, etc.) after that she will choose the appropriate products and treatments.

At the end of the facial, Yana will most likely apply a toner/serum or/and moisturizer and sunscreen if it is daytime. She will also end the session by telling you how you can take better care of your skin and she will recommend some products that will help the results from the facial last longer.

The B.T Micro device

The bt-micro™ is the latest rage in hand held professional technology and combines ultrasonic peeling with patented micro current and ultrasound penetration capabilities. It is a wonderful tool that will leave you with a cleaner, firmer skin. This is the perfect addition to our facial treatment regime.

The BT-micro™ is applied to the skin in upward, peeling motions. The exfoliation process with the BT-micro™ should take no more than 4-6 minutes. The results are amazingly clear and smooth skin that is ready to accept strategic topical products!

Here are the main Benefits of this procedure:

  • Cleanses and exfoliates for rejuvenating skin
  • Improves congested and blemished skin
  • Stimulates circulation of skin cell renewal
  • Tones facial muscles & hydrates the skin
  • Relaxes and reduces stress
  • Healthy circulation for cell renewal
  • Increase oxygen to the skins

DR CHARLES SERRURIER’S DECEMBER 2012 NEWSLETTER -SKIN CANCER-

Skin Cancer

The holidays are coming up and even though it is rather unpleasant to talk about cancer, I always need to make sure that my patients take good care of themselves and stay safe, especially in South Africa where the levels of Ultra Violet light we get are the highest in the world. Do you always remember to apply sunscreen on yourself and the little ones around you? I cannot stress enough how crucial it is.

Tanning can be dangerous and we often underestimate the terrible consequences of relaxing in the sun for long hours, unprotected. This is why this month; I chose to give you some insights about skin cancer. The South African statistics when it comes to this skin disease are alarming to say the least so I hope you enjoy this newsletter and remember to enjoy the sun in moderation!

Skin cancer in a nutshell…

Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells. It occurs when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells (most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds) triggers mutations, or genetic defects, that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumours.

Who is at risk?

Those most at risk for skin cancers are people with a family history of skin cancer, past personal history of skin cancers, a past history of excessive sun exposure or sunburns, blondes and red-heads, and those who use tanning beds.

Fair-skinned people are at higher risk of getting skin cancer than the general population, but people with dark complexions can also develop skin cancers. These growths may appear suddenly or develop over time, just as with fair skinned people.

→ Skin cancers often appear on areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun. But they can also develop in other areas, including on the palms, under the fingernails, between or under the toes and in the genital region.

The different kinds of skin cancer

→Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer, accounting for 8 out of 10 cases in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society, with similar statistics here in South Africa.

This type of skin cancer is found most often in areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun such as the face, neck, arms, and legs.

Basal cell carcinoma is usually a very slow growing cancer, and very rarely spreads to other areas in the body.

→A second type of skin cancer originates from the flat and thin squamous cells of the skin: the Squamous Cell cancer. This type of skin cancer often appears on parts of the body exposed to the sun.

Squamous cell carcinoma sometimes spreads to the fatty tissue underneath the epidermis, and from there can spread to other sites in the body.

→Melanomas are a type of skin cancer that begins in the darkly coloured melanocytes that make up moles on the skin.

Like the other two types of skin cancer, sun exposure increases the risk that melanocytes will transform into uncontrollably growing cells of melanoma.

What I can do about it.

In treating skin cancer, Dr Serrurier’s main goal is to remove or destroy the cancer completely, with as small a scar as possible.

After the local anesthetic is given, the tumour is excised, the cancer is the wound is sutured together meticulously to make the scar as small and neat as possible.

What you can do about it.

You can improve your chances of finding skin cancer promptly by regularly performing a simple skin self-exam. The best time to do this self-exam is after a shower or bath.

Simply make yourself aware of any new growths or moles that are changing color and shape. If something is bothering you, then please make an appointment. It is better to be safe than sorry.

You should check your skin in a well-lighted room using a full-length mirror and a hand-held mirror. It’s best to begin by learning where your birthmarks, moles and blemishes are and what they usually look like. Check for anything new–a change in the size, texture or color of a mole, or a sore that does not heal.

Dr CHARLES SERRURIER’S AUGUST 2012 NEWSLETTER: CHEMICAL PEELS

Heading now into the warmer months, my cosmetic patients are starting to make plans to undergo elective surgery.
My advice to them is always to prepare their skin and start getting close to an ideal body weight.

These two preparations can go a long way to a satisfied result and their importance cannot be stressed enough.

Slowly mimicking the facelift results

Being physically fit is something I cannot control, but skin quality is something I can – that is why I want to teach you a few things about Chemical Peels.

I hope you enjoy

Charles

Light peels

Light chemical peels are the most superficial and common peels with mild primary ingredients. This are most commonly alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), such as glycolic, lactic or fruit acid. Light peels remove the top layer of the skin in order to reveal the new layer of healthy skin underneath.

These peels are best for people who are encountering superficial skin problems only.

Lunchtime Chemical Peels

These peels are so quick and easy and you can get back to your normal activities straight after the procedure. This is why they are commonly known as “lunch time” peels.

The procedure goes like this:

  • Your skin will be cleansed before gently applying the peel.
  • The duration is 10 to 15 min during which you may feel some mild tingling or stinging feeling.
  • After the allotted time the peel will be washed off, revealing a pink colored but renewed skin.

The slight redness (and some possible blotches) is totally normal and should fade soon after. These are the only after effects to be expected.

In order to obtain optimum results, different AHA concentrations can be applied weekly or monthly but Yana will typically recommend you repeat it every 4 to 6 weeks, then monthly after that for a glowing a radiant skin.

Alternatives to Surgery

Chemical Peels are one of a very popular series of tools used by Plastic Surgeons to either enhance surgical result or employ as anti-ageing alternatives to surgery. Other options include Botox and Dermal Fillers.

Medium Chemical Peels

When it comes to medium peels, more potent acids are used, such as trichloroaetic acids (TCA). These peels are more intense in the sense that they penetrate further into the skin and can reduce deep acne scars, smaller wrinkles and help even skin tone.

TCA peels have been known to be especially successful in treating patients with darker skin tones.

These peels may require pre-treatment with AHA or Retin-A creams but we will guide you through the whole process.

Because its concentration is closer to that of a deep peel, medium peels can, to a certain extent and depending on the concentration and manner of application, achieve the results of a phenol (deep) peel.

During a medium peel:

Yana will cleanse the skin before applying the peel. The area will then turn a whitish-grey color and we will apply a saline compress to neutralize the acid in the peel. It is normal for your face to swell and burn while the peel is applied. Patients usually report a stinging feeling for around an hour after the treatment.

It roughly takes one week for most patients to recover after a medium peel. Your skin will be itchy and will then start to peel, first turning to a dark brown color and then becoming red.

In order to get the best results out of your medium peel, you should repeat the procedure monthly until you reach the desired effect and thereafter maintain the result with regular treatments every six to 12 months.

The final outcome will show a major improvement once your skin has fully healed.

Deep Chemical Peels

As its name suggests, the third peel category is the strongest: meet the Deep Peel (also called phenol peel). It is a great option if your face is showing deep wrinkles from unprotected sun exposure. It is also ideal for wrinkles around the lips and chin area but its high potency means you need to chat about it in detail with Dr Serrurier.

A full-face phenol peel usually takes Dr Serrurier 1 to 2 hours to perform and only a specialist should perform these peels.

After this procedure, your face will feel burny, itchy and swollen and you must be warned that you could feel unwell and experience moderate to severe pain for a few days.

It will be around two weeks before you can socialize again after a deep peel. But on the plus side, phenol peels give the most dramatic results by far and the effects can last up to ten years!

Dr Serrurier July Newsletter: Dermaceutic cosmeceuticals

Over the last couple of newsletter editions I’ve touched on procedures that I like to perform in the winter months – the cold weather aids certain procedures with recovery.

This month is somewhat different as I want to discuss your skin. The winter in the Highveld is dry and takes its toll on your skin – dehydrated skin hastens wrinkle formation and this deterioration of skin quality makes more pronounced visible signs of ageing.

Yana at the practice was hired in the practice to provide Chemical Peels and Facials to help reduce visible skin ageing and last month we ran a midmonth newsletter detailing her skills. This month I want to let you know about the product of choice at my practice – Dermaceutic.

I hope you enjoy what follows.

Skin Rejuvenation for Non Surgical Anti-Ageing

The Story behind Dermaceutic

Developed in France and Belgium by renowned dermatologists and scientists, Dermaceutic is a range of cosmeceuticals exclusively offered at trained professionals. In other words it is only available at specialist doctors. Dermaceutic offers professional and home care products and I chose to represent them because they offer quality skin treatment, protection and safety

What makes Dermaceutic unique?

The secret behind the Dermaceutic range is that it contains an original combination of active ingredients at concentrations proven to offer results. I do not want to stock a product in my rooms without prior research to know that results are proven if used correctly.

The professional treatments offered at my rooms consist of Chemical Peels from very superficial to medium and deep peels. These Chemical Peels if used correctly can resurface the skin, stimulate new collagen growth and eliminate wrinkles. Other Chemical Peel treatments address regulating sebaceous secretion, acne also decreasing and relieving pigmentation problems.

They are all followed up too with homecare options to enhance your final result.

Surgical Chemical Peels:

The deeper the Chemical Peel the better the result, but longer the downtime. For the most aggressive Chemical Peel I will need to take you to theatre and the downtime will be significant. Your skin, when healed, will be brand new and unblemished but you will need to take about a week off work.

THE PEELS BY DERMACEUTIC

The Cosmo Peel

The Dermaceutic Cosmo Peel is one of Yana’s favourite treatments. It is a simple skin rejuvenation procedure with a very little down-time.

It is a highly efficient treatment that Yana will use to improve a variety of skin disorders caused by ageing:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles,
  • Smoker’s skin complexion
  • Dark sun spots.

The Cosmo Peel treatment is usually done over several sessions. Yana usually advises 2 to 3 Cosmo Peel sessions in order to improve your skin quality.  Each treatment will last 35 to 45 minutes, but that is because we like to offer a relaxed treatment with some added extra’s.

The Spot Peel

Yana will use the Dermaceutic Spot Peel to treat:

  • Pigmentation spots,
  • Pregnancy dark spots
  • Melasma.

She also highly recommends it if your skin suffers from actinic keratoses and pigmentation disorders.

Dermaceutic Spot Peel is also perfectly suited for any kind of skin. Darker skin tones have always proven to be tricky to treat but using Spot Peel they can be safely treated with a natural blending of skin colours and no risk of hyper-pigmentation.

What happens during a Dermaceutic peel?

First, Yana will clean the skin to remove all oil and make-up. She will then apply the Dermaceutic peel using a small brush. Patients usually report a feeling of tingling and heat during the application – but nothing unbearable.

Once the Dermaceutic peel treatment is complete, Yana will remove the peel or neutralize it from the skin.

The frequency and number of treatments will be determined depending upon the peel applied, your skin condition and your desired result.
For optimum results, the sessions will need to be repeated every two to four weeks and its important to complete the treatments.

It common for patients to experience redness similar to a mild sunburn for a couple of days following a Chemical Peel. It is also of utmost importance to protect your skin from the sun – especially after a Chemical Peel.
